Psychosis

Psychosis is a complex experience where a person's perception of reality is disrupted. It can include hearing voices or seeing things that aren't there. This experience is not a sign of weakness or a personal failing. It is a medical condition that affects how the brain processes information and can be managed with professional support.

Schizophrenia is a specific type of psychosis that can affect a person's thoughts, feelings, and behavior. It is not a single disorder but a collection of symptoms that can vary in severity. With the right treatment, including medication and therapy, many people with schizophrenia can lead fulfilling lives and manage their symptoms effectively.

Accessing Community Mental Health Teams

Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs) are the primary point of contact for people in New Zealand who need ongoing mental health support. They provide a range of services, including assessment, therapy, and case management.

GP Referral

Your general practitioner (GP) is the first step in the NZ mental health system. They can assess your symptoms and refer you to a CMHT if they believe you need more specialist support.

Direct Referral

You can also be referred directly to a CMHT by a psychiatrist, a specialist nurse, or a mental health professional. This is often done when a GP referral is not suitable.

Community Services

CMHTs are available in most parts of New Zealand. They offer services in community settings, such as your local town or city, to make it easier for you to access care.

Support Services

They provide a range of support services, including individual therapy, group sessions, and case management. These services are designed to help you manage your mental health and improve your quality of life.
